Choosing Your Live Wedding Entertainment

There are many opportunities for live entertainment and a wedding is one of those events on the top of the list. Although live entertainment comes with a higher price tag, there are some items you can consider and keep in mind so you stay in your budget and have a quality entertainment package.

There are many forms of live entertainment. A bride and groom can choose to hire a live band, string ensemble, DJ, soloists, singers, skilled entertainer such as a comedian, and more. In these economic times, we are finding that more and more couples are choosing to go with a smaller budget on live entertainment.

Whichever live entertainment choice you choose, you will need to make sure you are getting quality entertainment for the price you are paying. You need to make sure the entertainer(s) are reliable, trustworthy and what you are looking for. When it comes to choosing a wedding entertainer, you want them to be likeable and appeal to a large crowd. In this case, personality does matter. If you do not mesh with your live entertainer, ten to one either will your guests. If this is the case, move on to the next interview. During the interview, make sure you ask important questions like what they will need for set-up, how much room is needed for set-up, over time charges, there play list or entertainment agenda, etc.

If you are looking to hire a DJ, there are some specific questions you will need to ask them. For instance, you should ask the DJ if he or she has liability insurance. If not, that might be a sign that they are not a professional. Professionals who have been in the industry for years know the importance of business, security and protection from incidentals. You will also want to ensure the DJ has back up equipment. This is a necessity in case the equipment breaks down. Again, this would be on the checklist of a true professional. It is also important to check to see what format the DJ is using. CD will produce the best quality and MP3 the second best quality. If you want the best, make sure that you double check that CD’s are being used because many DJ’s have converted to MP3 due to its compressed format.

A band, solo act or string ensemble is live entertainment at its best. For this, it is very important to research the entertainer and qualifications before you sign a contract. Before you commit, make sure you have seen recorded performances from previous events, preferably a wedding. You will also need to know who will need to be the emcee. Do they have one or is there one provided by the entertainer? Among these questions, it would be best to understand the type of music that the entertainer(s) perform. Hiring a group that plays a wide range of styles is good for some events but having strictly classical music is good for another. Be sure to understand what will entertain your guests along with being something you, as the couple, enjoy.

The bottom line is to understand, ask questions and be clear on all charges that will be incurred. The last thing you need after a wonderful day is a huge unexpected bill because the wedding reception went over by 30 minutes.
