Choosing A Baby Steriliser That's Right For You And Your Family
Babies are an expensive business so when investing in a baby product it is important to make sure that you make the right decision. However there is often such a broad range of baby products to choose from this can be a little overwhelming. This applies in particular to baby sterilisers as there are big differences between the devices available and it is therefore very important to choose the one which is right to you and your family. There is no right or wrong decision. It all depends on your lifestyle choices and your own personal preferences. All baby sterilisers can be divided into one of three categories.
One of the most common choices is the electric steam baby steriliser. These work by heating up water to convert it into steam. This in turn kills harmful bacteria on baby feeding equipment enclosed within the sterilisation chamber. These are stand-alone devices incorporating their own heating element which can therefore be used in any location with access to an electrical power supply. The sterilisation process is quick and entirely automated and the device will provide feedback to confirm that the sterilisation cycle has been successfully completed. Baby feeding equipment will then remain sterile, normally for a period of up to 24 hours, unless the sterilisation chamber is opened. The only disadvantages of choosing this device are the high cost in comparison to the other options and the size of the devices.
A microwave baby steriliser is another alternative. These are very similar to the electric steam steriliser but do not incorporate their own heating elements. As a result the whole device is placed within a conventional kitchen microwave to generate the heat and convert water into steam. These are cheaper than electric steam sterilisers and are a good choice for all parents who are willing to accept the obvious disadvantages of always requiring access to a microwave in order to use the device. This can create problems for instance when using the microwave for cooking or when traveling away from home.
The third and final option is a cold water steriliser. In contrast to the above these devices do not work via heat. These involve soaking baby feeding equipment in a very dilute solution of bleach for a prescribed period of time. You have to be very careful when using these devices as you need to ensure that no bubbles are present which could prevent the sterilisation fluid from making contact with the entire baby feeding equipment surface. It is also necessary to rinse off feeding equipment with boiled water to remove any traces of bleach. However some parents are naturally concerned about the risks of exposing their baby to harmful synthetic chemicals.
As can be seen from the above choosing a baby steriliser is not as challenging as you may have first thought. By taking the above into account when making a decision you can ensure that you purchase the device which is right for you. Most parents will ultimately opt for the electric steam baby steriliser.
