Choosing A House Design

There are several ways to go about choosing a house design. Firstly you can go to a builder of display homes and look at their designs. Because these plans are copyright, this may limit you to using their own builders, unless they are willing to negotiate with you. Builders often have many plans that you can choose from, but again, these may be subject o copyright, so you won't be able to take a copy and get someone else to build it.

If you fall in love with one design, but not the builder who owns it, you may be able to get an architect to draw up plans similar. He will need to make enough changes to the design that so that it will not be considered exactly the same as the one you like to avoid being accused of stealing copyright.

An architect needs to be registered with the Royal Australian Institute of Architects. Not all architects specialise in building homes, so make sure you get one who does. Architects can be quite expensive though, so you could consider having a draftsperson draw up your own design. They can only give limited advice, so you really do need to know what you are doing with your design to use their services.
