Are you thinking to yourself this summer, wouldn't it be great to buy a sailboat?
Are you asking yourself, what things should I consider prior to splashing out the cash for a used sailboat or used boat?
Are you looking for some general advice to get you started for choosing the right sailboat for you and your families or friends needs?
For a general overview, you obviously need to write a few things down, aspects of your intended use of your sailboat etc in order to be able to come to an informed decision upon which used sailboat is the right one for you.
First you need to think about where you live and the availability of water near your home or vacation home? Is this near a river or a lake or are you on the ocean? What about storage for your boat or yacht? Do you need a mooring, or is the sailboat or yacht small enough to pull behind your vehicle?
What exactly do you want to use it for? Would you like to buy a used sailboat for day cruising, weekend getaways or for use for longer periods of time?
How many people will their generally be on board at any one time, whilst it is in use by you? Sailboats by definition can often be quite cramped on-board, so trying to fit six people on-board a four person sailboat could really be stretching it a bit, not to mention the safety aspects whilst out on the water, this is likely to be your primary concern.
Will the boat me a modern sailboat made of glass fiber or are you looking for classic good looks and a used sailboat made of wood? Do you know how much it costs to maintain regularly a wooden sailboat compared to a glass fiber one?
What about an engine? Would you prefer to go with an inboard engine or simply put an outboard engine on the stern?
What about sailboat rigging and sails? Are these in superb, very well looked after condition?
If the used sailboat can be trailered, what is the overall weight and how will this reflect on the miles per gallon for the vehicle towing your yacht or boat? What about slipway fees, have you built this into the equation? What ongoing maintenance of the hull etc, anti-fouling and keeping the used boat or yacht maintained in tip top condition?
Is the boat seaworthy, does it come with a certificate of seaworthiness from a qualified marine surveyor?
Only when you have many of these questions clear and fully answered in your mind should you consider buying a used sailboat or used yacht, if you ask yourself these questions first, you could just end up not only saving a considerable amount of money but too, remain safe on the water, after all, that is what it is all about at the end of the day, enjoying yourself with your family and friends just as much as you possibly can.
