Chumming For Carp

Fishing by throwing bait into the water in order to attract your fish to you is called chumming. Many experienced carp fishermen recognize the importance of this method when looking to catch carp. Although the use of chumming is not legal in all states, it can be extremely effective where it is. Before you begin your first chumming expedition, be sure to verify it is legal within your location.

Chumming for carp can involve many different kinds of bait but American fishermen tend to prefer using corn while anglers in the U.K. tend to prefer boilies. However, you can always chum with different baits as well.

People have been known to chum for carp using bread, dog food, and dough balls as well. Many anglers believe it is wise to chum with the same bait as the fish will be attracted to the location and begin eating. If you used corn, chances are that they eat a few kernels before they even see and go for your bait. Now your bait is just another kernel to them and they pick it right up.

Some anglers have attempted chumming with corn and fishing with larger dough balls. The idea behind this method is in hopes of catching a larger fish with the bigger bait. However, interestingly enough you may find that mixing a small amount of vanilla extract with just the corn is actually more effective.

Now that you have been made aware of the basics of chumming, there are a few tips that can help every angler use this technique more efficiently. If you happen to be fishing in a body of water that is somewhat unfamiliar to you, chumming is a great way to test out the waters. You can begin by emptying half to a full can of kernels of corn into the water prior to you casting out your line. The idea here is to try to chum in a straight line either parallel to the shore or from shallow waters to deeper waters. Once that has been done, dump some more corn kernels in a small circle where you will then cast your line as if your line is leading them to the mother load of food. Once the fish make their way to the center of the circle of corn, they will usually stay long enough to take your bait and for you to hook them.
