Cisco Ccna (640-553) Security Exam Training: Using The Aaa Authentication Username-prompt Command
Network administrators (like you) use the “aaa authentication username-prompt” command to change the text that’s displayed when users are prompted to enter a username. In other words, normally, when a user attempts to authenticate he or she will see the default username prompt that appears as “Username” like you see below: Username: But, if a network administrator (like you) chooses too, he or she can create a custom text username prompt; and, that custom text username prompt will be seen by the users when they are prompted to enter a username instead of the default one. Below is the command’s syntax: aaa authentication username-prompt text-string As you can see, the “text-string" portion; is the actual customized text that will be shown to a user when he or she is prompted to enter a username. By the way, if the text-string contains spaces or unusual characters, it must be enclosed in double-quotes like you see in the example below: Router(config)#aaa authentication username-prompt “Enter your name here:” Note: If you are currently using a remote TACACS+ server for authentication and you decide to type the aaa authentication username-prompt command on your router(s); the command will not override the remote TACACS+ server’s username prompt. In other words, the aaa authentication username-prompt command does not change any dialog that is supplied by a remote TACACS+ server. And, like with mostly all Cisco IOS commands; you can use the word “no” in front of the command to remove (disable) the configured command to return to the default; like you see below: Router(config)#no aaa authentication username-prompt And, to use the “aaa authentication username-prompt” command your router(s) must be running Cisco IOS 11.0 or higher.
