Cisco Ccna (640-553) Security Training: Using The Aaa Authentication Attempts Login Command
Network administrators (like you) use the “aaa authentication attempts login” Global configuration command to set the maximum number of login attempts that will be permitted (allowed) before a session is dropped. In other words, when a network administrator uses the command he or she is telling the router to only allow (permit) a specific number of aaa login attempts before dropping the session immediately. Below are the syntax and example of the command: Syntax: aaa authentication attempts login number-of-attempts Example: Router(config)#aaa authentication attempts login 6 In the example above, the router will prompt a user for a username and password (six) times before it will just drop the session altogether. By default, the number of login attempts is set to 3; but it can be set to 1 or as many as 25 (the range is from 1 to 25). And, if you need to reset the number of login attempts back to 3 (default) just type the word “no” in front of the command like you see below: Example: Router(config)#no aaa authentication attempts login 6 Remember, in order for you to use this command; you must globally enable AAA first by using the aaa new-model command; and your router(s) must be running Cisco IOS 12.2 T or higher.
