"ciske The Rat" Starring Danny De Munk

"Ciske the Rat" is a story of neglect, lost innocence, and hope. Young Ciske (played by the adorable Danny de Munk) is a boy who is starved for love and attention. His mother is an alcoholic who parades men through the house on a regular basis, his father is off to sea, apparently in an attempt to get away from his wife, and poor Ciske is left to fend for himself while working long hours at the pub with his mother after school.

Ciske tends to get into a lot of trouble. At the beginning of the movie he pours a bottle of ink onto his teacher's head. This winds him up in a reformatory, and little chance of getting into any school after he gets out. He is constantly getting into fights with other boys, and engages in petty theft. One gets the sense though that Ciske isn't really that bad of a child, he is just so starved for attention that he will do anything to get it.

Eventually his dad shows back up with the intention of getting remarried and spending more time with Ciske, but he and his soon to be ex-wife spend too much time fighting to leave time to spend time their son. Finally, in a fit of rage caused by all the turmoil he has had to go through, Ciske winds up stabbing his mom. He runs away to hide at his dad's girlfriend's house, not knowing whether his mom is alive or not.

Although Ciske wants to do what's right, his circumstances tend to not allow him to take the right path. He has a mentor in one of his teachers who sees hope for the wayward boy, but will he be able to save the boy before it is too late?

Overall this is a great movie with an interesting plot and story, but it does tend to be a little melodramatic in some parts. Danny de Munk does an excellent job as the naive and innocent but delinquent little boy, but the stabbing scene looked extremely fake. Other than that this movie is worth a look.
