City Walking - Usa

If you are attracted by the idea of a holiday that involves guided walking, USA big cities may not immediately strike you as your first choice of destinations. But if you leave them off your itinerary you may be missing an opportunity for a walking holiday with a difference.

Walking, USA cities and transport

Many of the larger US cities have become iconic tourist destinations. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Las Vegas, New York City and Washington DC (plus others) all have a vast number of things to see and do. However, like all big cities, they are large conurbations that may have certain common characteristics, such as:

• they can be difficult to drive around and parking may be tricky to find close to the main sights;

• finding your way around on public transport may not always be easy and may prove to be intimidating for some;

• they may have areas that are best avoided, if possible.

Given that many people are attracted to guided tours that involve walking, USA major city centre destinations are particularly well suited to being explored in this fashion.

Missing nothing and seeing everything

If you are fortunate enough to be on a guided tour walking in the USA, your leader will be able to show you all of the key sights. They may use a combination of public and coach transport and you will not have to worry that you will end up getting lost or accidentally drifting into undesirable areas. You also will not need to fret that you will be struggling for fitness and desperately trying to catch up with other people.

Guided walking tour operators are well aware that people's fitness levels may vary considerably and there will be a tour suitable for your age group and capabilities. Perhaps one of the biggest advantages of this type of the city centre exploration, is that you will be able to see those secret gems and points of interest that exist in many city centre areas but which may be known only to locals.

Other cities

Of course, not all cities in the United States are huge mega-cities. There are many other city centres that are less well known internationally but which may be equally well worth exploring.

If you are looking at holidays built around exploring by walking, USA cities such as Richmond (Virginia - home to the Museum of the Confederacy), San Diego (California - home to a world-famous zoo and aquarium), Philadelphia (Pennsylvania - first capital of the USA) and Chicago (Illinois) are just some of the other centres that may be worth walking around on a guided tour.

So, if you like the idea of a holiday that includes the opportunity to do some walking, USA cities might be well worth considering as potential destinations.
