Cleaning 1911 Grips And What You Should Know

Almost all 1911 pistols nowadays come with grips. Since our hands are made of various shapes and sizes, manufacturers are now starting to make pistols with different interchangeable pistol grips and sizes. These items are often overlooked in the cleaning process. Here are some important tips to think about when cleaning your pistol grips.


Removing your 1911 grips

Assuming you are finished cleaning your pistol and have it disassembled, the next step you are going to do is unscrew and remove the 1911 pistol grips from the body frame. Though you can clean the grips from your 1911, it's not recommended.

Remember that your 1911 grips may be under stress from the grip screws being too tight. You don't want to have your screwdriver slip and scratch your pistol or your 1911 grips. There are also special 1911 grip screw drivers that can be used to remove the grips.

Once your grips are unscrewed and removed from the frame, you can now proceed with cleaning the front and back of your grips. You will also want to wipe down the frame of any carbon that my be left behind.

Cleaning your 1911 grips

Choosing the right cleaning solution for your 1911 grips can be a bit confusing. You are going to want to select the right cleaner for your style of grips. For example, some people like to use only mild soap and water for ivory style grips. Some choose a solution that would be used for special wood. Be sure to double check your grips material and choose a cleaner accordingly.

Once you've finished wiping down your pistol frame and grips with your cleaner. It's now time to reassemble your pistol grips to the frame. Using the same screwdriver, mount the 1911 grips to the pistol frame and tighten the screws. That's it!
