Clone Wars Season 4 Review

The clone wars cartoon series has been a fantastic addition to the Star Wars saga. In the movies Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith we got to see the opening and closing battles of the war. The series goes into detail on the battlefield, in space and in the senate. What you will notice on first watching the Clone Wars is that popular characters are included but are presented slightly differently. There is no Star Wars theme tune but the music heard is easily identifiable as related to the saga. Episodes in the first two seasons have been getting better and better but how does the third season stack up? It's a mixed bag.

Like the seasons before it there are a few yawn fest episodes but also some fantastic ones. Season 3 has felt a bit more gimmicky due to the appearance of Savage Opress (Darth Mauls brother) and Chewbacca being shoe horned in. But also like the previous seasons there are some fantastic moments.

The good. The separatists mount an attack on Kamino which is inventive and great fun to watch. We see some really great battles on the outside of the clones birthplace and there are great characters in this episode including Grievous himself and Asajj Ventress. Near the end of the series there is an epic trio of episodes where Anakin and Kenobi attempt to rescue Captain Tarkin from a separatist fortress. The bad guy in those episodes is fantastic and one of the most entertaining new Star Wars characters I've seen in a while. His name is Osi Sobeck and he is given a talking style much like Christopher Walken. Check him out, he's fantastic. The episode featuring Chewbacca is also really entertaining and that is partly due to a gang of Trandoshan bounty hunters who you will recognise as the same species as Bossk from the Empire Strikes Back.

The bad. There are also quite a few really boring episodes that I would rather not have sat through. These mainly include the Senate, Padme and Mandalore. Less of these next time please. There is the addition of a new character Savage Opress who is the same species as Darth Maul. He is taken by Count Dooku as his new apprentice after Sidious orders Dooku to kill off Ventress. These episodes should have been the highlight of the series as they also show us the Nightsisters from the expanded Star Wars universe. While they are entertaining I would rate them as average. I was expecting them to blow me away but instead I found them lacking.

Any new series of Star Wars is a welcome one and while this season has a lot of outstanding episodes it's dragged down by a few duds.
