Cochran Mill Nature Center

Cochran Mill Nature Center, located just twenty minutes southwest of Atlanta, is the perfect setting to enjoy a short nature walk. Visitors will be able to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and explore the natural surroundings. The property consists of 50 acres of heavily wooded land, a picturesque creek with waterfalls, and a small pond.

The facility was established as a private non-profit environmental educational center. Its mission is to create community awareness of environmental stewardship through its educational and wildlife rehabilitation programs. Cochran Mill Nature Center is a licensed animal rehabilitation facility. The center is home to a variety of birds of prey, such as owls, hawks, and vultures. All of these resident birds have been permanently injured and can no longer live in the wild. The nature center has one of the largest reptile exhibits in the state. Several Egyptian fruit bats also reside at Cochran Mill.

The nature trails provide an opportunity to observe area wildlife and see some large granite outcrops. These outcrops provide a unique ecosystem for specialized plants and animals. The trails follow along the banks of a creek, and hikers will see a couple of cascading waterfalls. Visitors may also feed the fish in the pond, enjoy a picnic lunch, and stop by the bog garden. Carnivorous plants in the bog garden include Venus flytraps and pitcher plants.

A 4,000 square foot log structure is used for program activities at the nature center. Cochran Mill regularly presents wildlife demonstrations, Saturday workshops, and lots of hands on activities for children. A variety of family events are scheduled throughout the year including nature camps, a Snake Day Festival, and seasonal activities. Programming topics include conservation, ecology, backyard habitats, and native plants and animals.

Cochran Mill Nature Center is located at 6300 Cochran Mill Road in Palmetto, Georgia. The facility is open Monday through Saturday from 9am-3pm. Admission prices are very reasonable. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children ages 2-11. Children under age 2 are admitted free.

Cochran Mill Park, just one mile down Cochran Mill Road from the nature center, is also worth visiting while in the area. This is a public park owned by the City of Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia, and is not affiliated with the nature center. The park has hiking and horse trails, a playground, and a picnic shelter.

Cochran Mill Nature Center is an area gem. It preserves green space for the enjoyment of residents and visitors as well as providing opportunities to learn about and explore nature.
