Coffee Makers In The Twenty First Century
When you think of robots you probably imagine a stiff, silver structure with pointy fingers yet not much luck picking anything up. Well now there’s a new “hand” in town developed by researchers from the University of Chicago, Cornell and the iRobot Corp, this new device works by gripping objects rather than simply picking them up. Known as the ‘Universal Gripper’ the hand works because of its clever design, a balloon filled with ground coffee and a vacuum. According to the University of Chicago, “It basically works on the same mechanics as when coffee shops vacuum-seal packs of ground espresso,” who knew ground coffee could help revolutionise the face (or hand) of robotics! MacDonald’s Brew As MacDonald’s attempts to branch out beyond fast food lovers, their appeal to become a serious competitor within the coffee market has not gone unnoticed. Alongside their recent opening hour of 6am, their freshly ground coffee is made using Arabica coffee beans that come from sustainable farms certified by the Rainforest Alliance. Katie Holmes, 28 an employee of the restaurant chain recently got the opportunity to take part in a conservation project in South America to gain an insight into coffee-farming. She said of the trip “I think it’s really important that my colleagues understand what a positive impact every cup of coffee they serve is having on the environment too.” Coffee Table Taboo It was around this time 18 years ago that Madonna’s infamous book Sex was released, causing worldwide controversy. Described as a coffee table book, the pages consisted of photos of Madonna posing in various positions, perhaps not quite your average tome for a casual chat over some caffeine. With the likes of a meat clad Lady Gaga taking over the world, it would be interesting to see if such a publication would cause a similar uproar in today’s more understanding society. Would you proudly display this book on your coffee table? Coffee Prices Rising in the Middle East Caffeine lovers in Israel are feeling the pinch as some coffee chains plan to increase their prices by 10%. Aroma Israel said the price of a cup of coffee will see a rise of 8-12% in the coming days as part of a new winter menu. Expensive ingredients appear to be behind the surge in prices. Following the summer month’s coffee beans rates reached an all-time high within 13 years within international markets. This is sure to cause a knock on effect for the rest of the world.
