Cold Water Effects On The Body

Have you ever heard of the Polar Bear Club? Yikes! I'm not sure what physiological effect cold water has on the human body, but you can 'Google it' if you like. All I know is that I'm a real wimp when it comes to cold water.

You see, I just mention all this because I live in Japan and they seem to have a fondness here of bathing in water that is near the boiling point (well, very very hot!) or occasionally going to the other extreme and immersing themselves in water that is ice-cold. (The real kicker for me is the practice of first soaking in a scalding hot bath and then suddenly jumping into an ice cold one- one would think that would give you an instant heart attack, but apparently not.)

There are a lot of mountains in Japan, and where I live in Southern Japan the mountains are quite steep so there are lots of waterfalls. These waterfalls usually come from cold springs, so they are ice cold even in summer. Not surprisingly it is de rigueur in the summertime when hiking to stand under one of these waterfalls, or, alternatively, soak in a mountain stream. Both are extremely cold. Not surprisingly, there is legend to the falls (isn't there always?) that stipulates you must immerse yourself in one in order to wash away the sins that you collected on the way.

One of my friends is a stout and rather squat fellow, and he takes to these freezing cold waterfalls like a fish to water. He claims it's sheer torture for the first five seconds but then it feels great. I can't even get my arm in for one second much less my whole body for five. Cold water is not for me- except to drink.
