Columbia College

Columbia College is a private liberal arts college for women in Columbia, South Carolina. The college is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Columbia College is small, with an enrollment of 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students. Students receive personalized attention with a low student-faculty ratio of 13:1. The college’s challenging academic programs prepare women for leadership roles.

The college was founded in 1854 as Columbia Female College. In 1865 the college was forced to close because of the Civil War. It reopened in 1873 and saw growth over the next several decades. The word female was dropped from the name in 1905. The college moved to its present location on the north side of Columbia in 1904. Columbia College has experienced three devastating fires in its history, so most of the buildings on campus are not that old. Many of the buildings were constructed after the last fire, which swept the campus in 1964.

Columbia College offers 35 undergraduate majors in a wide variety of fields. There is also a pre-med program. The college confers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. Columbia offers two graduate degree programs. Students may earn a Masters of Arts in Organizational Change and Leadership or a Masters of Education in Divergent Learning. The college has an evening program that accepts both male and female students. The evening program allows students to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in a dozen different majors. Columbia College’s Leadership Institute trains women for leadership roles within their professions and communities. Outreach programs, seminars, and networking events are available to women throughout the state.

Columbia students are able to participate in a wide range of activities and organizations on campus. Some of the options include honor societies, special interest groups, religious organizations, service organizations, professional groups, music and theater groups, and student publications. Six residence halls are available on campus. Students are required to live on campus for their first two years.

Students may also participate in athletics. Columbia College offers five varsity sports: basketball, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. The Fighting Koalas are part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Columbia has just ended its affiliation with the Southern States Athletic Conference. The school will compete in the Appalachian Athletic Conference for the 2011-12 season.

Columbia College is located at 1301 Columbia College Drive. The campus is north of downtown near the intersection of Highways 21 and 321. Students at Columbia College are able to take advantage of all the activities and attractions that South Carolina’s capital city has to offer.
