Columbia, South Carolina’s Professional Ballet Companies

Columbia, South Carolina is fortunate to be the home of two excellent professional ballet companies. These companies entertain patrons with several high quality performances each year. Both companies perform at the Koger Center for the Arts on the campus of the University of South Carolina.
The Columbia City Ballet celebrates its 51st season in 2011-12. With a professional company of 32 dancers, the Columbia City Ballet is one of the most versatile ballet companies in the Southeast. William Starrett is the Artistic Director. There are two major performances left in this season. Romeo and Juliet will be presented on February 3-4. This classic ballet is the tragic love story of two young members from feuding families.

Performances begin at 7:30pm each evening. On March 9-10 the company will perform Sleeping Beauty, the classic fairy tale of a princess under a magic spell and the prince who awakens her. Evening performances are at 7:30pm, and the matinee performance on March 10 begins at 3pm.
Tickets may be purchased online or by phone from Capitol Tickets. Prices range from $13-$36 for adults and $11-$33 for children and seniors. A special event will precede the matinee performance on March 10. The Sleeping Beauty Tea will afford attendees the opportunity to meet the principal dancers. The event is suitable for children. Tickets for the Tea are $15 for adults and $20 for children.

The Columbia Classical Ballet is celebrating its 20th season this year. Radenko Pavlovich is the founder and Artistic Director. During his professional career, Pavlovich danced with companies in London, Munich, Austria, Yugoslavia, Ecuador, and Atlanta. The Columbia Classical Ballet recruits talented performers from around the world. There is one ballet remaining on this season’s schedule. Le Corsaire (The Pirate) will be performed on March 2 at 7:30pm. There is an educational outreach performance that day at 10am. The ballet is a classical 19th century story with pirates, military officers, and the women who love them. Guest artist will be Brooklyn Mack, Principal Dancer with the Washington Ballet. Ticket prices range from $5-$32, and may be purchased from Capitol Tickets.

The Koger Center for the Arts is located at 1051 Greene Street, at the University of South Carolina. It is one of Columbia’s premier venues for the performing arts. After 6pm free parking is available on streets surrounding the Koger Center. Parking is also available in lots behind the Carolina Coliseum and in the Discovery Garage off Park Street. Parking fees are $5 at these locations.
