Common Courses For Greek Cruise Lines

When planning a cruise in the eastern Mediterranean, particularly one focusing on multiple stops at the myriad of islands of the Aegean and Ionian seas, it is strongly recommended that - although cruise lines from several other nations visit those destinations as well - you travel on ships from Greek cruise lines. Such excursions depart from Piraeus, just outside Athens, and are also close to the Hellenicon International Airport.

Popular ports of call include the island of Aegina, close to Piraeus and home to some of the best pistachios of the Mediterranean. Santorini, the site of one of the three active volcanoes in the region, is a popular honeymoon destination. Its archipelago is believed by some to be comprised of the sunken mountain peaks of the lost continent of Atlantis. Take a donkey ride up the volcano, and stop for appetizers ("mezethes") and a glass of local wine at one of the outdoor tavernas. The seafood is excellent!

No Greek cruise would be complete without a stop at Mykonos, with its whitewashed houses, friendly natives, and Peter the Pelican to welcome you at the dock. From there, travel to Delos, "the island of the dead," and go via Greek cruise lines south to Crete and Rhodes, or northwest to Lesbos, and beyond to the ruins of Troy at Hissarlik.

Greek cruise lines also serve the Ionian Sea, with Ithaca (kingdom of wise Odysseus), and Corfu, a beautiful resort island with a golf course and casino.
