Communication - The Key To Your Affiliates Success
As an affiliate marketer you should make it your priority to contact your affiliates on a regular basis. The reasons for this are two fold.
1) it is essential that good affiliates get all the encouragement and backing that they need.
2) it is essential that bad affiliates are weeded out.
Lets look a little closer at these points.
Put simply, contacting your affiliates shows them that you care about the partnership. It is really poor business practice to spend time, effort and money trying to attract affiliates to your site and then cast them adrift is the uncertain and often daunting sea of online marketing. Don’t assume that your affiliates will contact you if they need anything. They will of course , but often only to iron out some problem that could have been avoided with proper back-up and training. Why have the hassle ! They don’t need it and neither do you.
It is a very good tactic to get in touch with your affiliates to find out if they need anything that could help them to market your product or service more effectively. Over time, the affiliate that does not receive regular contact will move away to merchants that do. You must encourage and motivate your affiliates.
This can be achieve through a newsletter that offers regular updates about your product and subsequent innovations or upgrades. It can also review your market and highlight the success that they are helping to bring to your business. Free give-aways are a great motivator as are sales letters or any other resources that can be provided to help them, which in turn helps you. And always, and I do mean always, listen to your affiliates. Encourage feedback. Positive feedback about your company can always be used in your sales copy, but only with your affiliates permission. These and other innovative tactics will help and encourage your affiliates to perform and makes for a mutually profitable partnership.
Contact with your affiliates also allows you to monitor that they are promoting your business as you would wish. If not, this could prove to be very costly indeed and not just financially. Bad affiliates must be weeded out. This statement is not directed at those that are under performing. This is a relatively minor problem that can be addressed with the correct training and encouragement. Rather, the statement is aimed at the con-artists that, unfortunately populate cyberspace.
It is a most unfortunate fact of life that the world is full of those unscrupulous few who are out for a fast buck. These parasites infest the world both on and offline.
Increasingly merchant marketers are expected to monitor the activities and actions of their affiliates and could be held to account should these activities violate online etiquette or more importantly national and international law.
It is obvious then that checks and measures must be employed to discourage the undesirables.
It is preferable that the affiliate has a current, live website and/or blog that can be periodically checked for relative, quality content that relates to the product or service that you are providing. You should also make it clear from the outset what content may or may not be used from your website. Your affiliates should be given all the required tools to promote to the highest possible standards.
Fraud is an ongoing and increasing problem. Some of these undesirables have been known to use malware as well as fake or stolen I.D. and credit card information. Unfortunately this is a sad fact of life that we must all guard against and regular checking goes some way to addressing the problem.
You can see from the forgoing why it is essential that you communicate with your affiliates and even try to personalise your contact as much as possible. This may at first seem a daunting prospect but most if not all of this can be outsourced if required. The most important things to remember are, always keep your lines of communication open with the affiliate and always provide quality training and back-up. Make this a part of your overall business strategy and success will follow.
