A detailed agenda to ensure proper implementation of the ‘Khadi Reforms and Development Programme’ has been recently laid out by the ‘Reforms Implementation and Monitoring Committee’ that was formed under the chairmanship of Dinesh Rai, secretary (MSMEs).

Issuing a press release, the Ministry of MSMEs stated, “The monitoring committee has recently held its first meeting in the national capital to review the progress made so far with regard to the implementation of the ‘Khadi Reforms and Development Programme’ worth US$150 million being supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).”

Action plan as laid out by the monitoring committee includes some significant steps such as conducting complete audit of khadi institutions in the first phase, enhancing marketing infrastructure and undertaking measures pertaining to design and register the khadi mark.

“Steps as mentioned by the monitoring committee in the comprehensive action plan, if followed, will ensure the development of small-scale khadi units, thereby paving the way for sector’s higher development,” said S Chatterjee, spokesperson of Khadi Emporium, a mid-sized khadi selling store in Kolkata.

The action plan also has mention of the establishment of a marketing organisation and called for private participation in order to bring about improvement in production of raw materials in central sliver plants of Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) as well as khadi institutions.
