Tanning salons have become very popular for those that like that tanned look all year. That said, there are ways to tell whether it is for you.Tanning beds used in these salons have improved greatly over the past few years. They are safer than before. But they don't eliminate all the risks of natural sun or a natural tan such as skin cancer.

So there is a variety of research you should do before you schedule that salon appointment. You can look into the best tanning beds, and get the latest health and safety warnings and recommendations about their use. But certain people can make the decision right away. Certain skin types are not the best for tanning. People who are very light and don't tan, or who tend to freckle may not want to use tanning beds. Additional risks are if you had bad sunburns as a child, or a history of skin cancer in your family, as these are both indications that you may be at an elevated risk for skin cancer.

Certainly, people under 16 should avoid using them, as well as those taking certain medications. Some people have a medical problem that gets worse when exposed to light rays (speak to your doctor to determine if you are in these categories).

All people, whether or not they are at high risk, should keep an eye on any moles, skin discoloration or freckles to watch for any changes over time as this could be a sign of a problem. Also, you may want to have a regular check by a dermatologist.
