Constructing A Yeast Starter For Your Home Brew Beer
Yeast starters will improve the original population of yeast before you pitch it in to the wort. You won't want to use it immediately, but a yeast starter can go bad so they're usually readied 24 hours in advance. Even so, starters will preserve for more time if refrigerated. Generally a yeast starter will cut down the amount of lag time and allow quicker fermentation. A yeast starter can go a long way toward improving the quality of the beer you home brew. But how do you create one? As a beginning home brewer, I would sometimes simply toss in packets or vials of yeast into my beer regardless of the amount needed. Also, I wouldn't adjust the quantity of yeast added by the variety of beer I was brewing which, you'll come to find out. The caliber of the yeast contained in standard liquid brewer's yeast packs & vials has gotten better over time, but there just isn't enough yeast included in these packages for ideal pitching of your home brewed beer. Underpitching your home brew might result in slower startup, a greater risk of infection, off flavors and sometimes impaired fermentation.
