Contemporary Indigenous Australian Art On Display In Havana
Both Cuban residents and foreign tourists will have the chance to see and include as suggested cultural Cuba holidays a unique Australian exhibition at the Salon Blanco (White Room) belonging to the San Francisco de Asis Convent, located in the oldest area of the Cuban capital city. Coinciding with Australia's National Day, the Balgo Hills exhibition will display 26 works from 18 outstanding artists from the region of Balgo, which was previously known as Balgo Hills. Balgo is a small aboriginal community in Western Australia famous for its artists' cooperative established between the Great Sandy Desert and the Tanami Desert. This Australian area started to develop a colourful production of plastic arts unlike other similar creations in the 80s in the great continental island. The Australian artists were inspired by the wisdom, myths, ancient traditions of Balgo's community and its surrounding desert geography, which gives the works a combination of modern and old features from contemporary painting techniques and traditional view of the world. "There is currently an upsurge in interest in Aboriginal art among the Australian public and overseas visitors...The resultant pressure on artists to produce has led ultimately to a collapse or emasculation of the art form. Aboriginal art is now under incredible strain to fulfill white demands on Aboriginal culture", said indigenous Australian activist Djon Mundine. The exhibition will form part of the Australia Journey cultural project, organised by the Australian government in collaboration with the Havana City Historian's Office, responsible for restoring Old Havana, a UNESCO Heritage Site and one of the major holiday destinations in Cuba. Havana, by far the leading cultural centre of the country, offers tourists a wide variety of attractions, which provide them with excellent cultural Cuba holidays that range from museums, palaces, public squares, avenues, churches and fortresses (including the largest fortified complex in the Americas dating from the 16th through 18th centuries). Old Havana has been pioneering the implementation of tourism related sustainable programmes in Cuba for eco-friendly Havana holidays. So far, every business or social initiative conducted in the area has achieved great success in terms of contributing to the preservation of cultural heritage and improving local people's quality of life.
