Content Is King Online

I'm sure that most people have heard the phrase Content is King in some capacity. If you haven't, then I am going to teach you about its importance in this blog posting.

Within the context of the internet, web site development, and search engine optimization (SEO), content is simply the text, words, images, videos, and sounds that are used to develop and publish web pages. While it is a simple idea, it is very surprising how many websites fail to offer effective content to their users. How many times have you visited a website that really had nothing to offer? To many if you ask me. Just because websites rank high in search rankings does not mean they offer the information you are looking for.

The reason there are so many poor websites out there is because the internet is widely unregulated. Since its inception, there have been no rules established as to what constitutes good web content, and in the age of WYSIWYG's anyone can create content online. There is no need for any form of technical skills beyond a basis understanding of computers.

Unlike other industries that have predefined rules or codes of conduct, there is no overarching regulative body that ensures there is a minimum set of standards online.

The Golden Rule in SEO

Known as the golden rule in SEO, content is king for a number of reasons. Just like in a book, good content engages readers or visitors on your website. Good content also helps to increase search engine rankings and traffic and also increases the likelihood of other sites linking to your site. People generally visit websites for four primary reasons:

• To learn • To communicate • To be entertained • Or to make a purchase

Effective content is needed in all these instances. Having good content on your site makes your visitor more likely to not only come back, but also tell others about your site. The most popular sites on the internet are the most popular for a reason!

Therefore, good content is an effective marketing tool that many have failed to take advantage of!

What is Good Content?

Good content is:

• Easy to read • Well organized • Has a purpose • Broken down into small paragraphs • Is subdivided by headers • Categorized into logical segments • Gives your visitors a reason to come back

With the average person only taking a few seconds to decide if they want to continue to navigating through your website, good content will go a long way to keep them interested in what you have to say. For these reasons, content will continue to be a top priority for years to come.
