Copenhagen Summit On Climate Change… For Mayors

The mayoral summit is the less read about, but perhaps equally important as the world leaders summit. Most mayors have a greater sense of what makes their people tick on a local level, whereas the leaders are working on a mass scale. What works in LA, may not work in rural Texas and the mayoral summit is a way of similar regions finding similar solutions.

Surely the ability to share progress and new ideas with like minded people would be vital to the success of this summit and yet, The City of Copenhagen don’t seem to be taking this sharing of solutions as seriously as they should.

Don’t get me wrong, the summit is fantastic idea and the world will come away with even more champions rallying their Senators, Heads of State and Presidents to follow through on their promise of a reduction in carbon emissions, but how can we know they are actually getting all the ideas and messages correctly.

The City of Copenhagen is not paying for interpreters at this conference, instead insisting that non-English speaking nations include an interpreter in their own delegation. Firstly, where is the quality control in this, surely an issue like this, needs to have the strictest of controls over the right messages being spread to all the people. The second thing that concerns me is that most of the European nations already speak English well as a first or second language, but when you get to third world regions such as India, or Africa it is less likely that English is part of their vocabulary. I know that the cost for them to bring their own interpreter is only a small expense in the scheme of their global debt, but $5000-$10,000 could probably help rebuild whole communities and that seems unfair.

Surely for the sake of $50,000-$100,000, interpreters could be provided to the people that will help keep climate change on track.
