Corner Brook

On the west side of the island there is Corner Brook. It is the second largest town in the province. This is the sunniest region and has some interesting sites. For an excellent view of the city visitors head up to the cliffs overlooking the Humber Arm. A National Historic Site there captain James Cook is honored with a monument for his work surveying the region in the middle of 1760s. Up north LAnseaux meadows is the National Historic Park and it is a one thousand year old Viking settlement. The park remains much like it was when the Scandinavian and Greenland Vikings arrived. They were the first Europeans to land in North America.

Across the Strait of Belle isle is one of the largest cleanest and most natural regions in the country called Labrador. It is home to the world largest herd of caribou and until recently the only human residents included the Inuit and a few long time residents descended from early European settlers.


The Rock as Newfoundland is known is a unique place with much beauty, history and character. Aside from the varied land the people of Newfoundland are an interesting group mainly the English and Irish in origin. They have developed their own distinct culture. Of particular interest is the definite dialect, slang and inflection of their language. Although they are speaking English even fellow Canadians sometimes cannot understand them.

Newfoundlanders are friendly people with a wit that has developed from the hardship and realities of living in a unique and challenging environment.
