Couple's Creative Vegetable-themed Film Wins Them A Bahamas Wedding

A loved up couple from Doncaster have been chosen as one of the winners in a wedding competition in The Bahamas after they submitted a video which involved a proposal, a wedding ceremony and award-winning vegetables.

Adele Freeman and John Applin entered the competition that was launched by the Bahamas Tourist Office where 16 couples would win Bahamas weddings.

The couple both work at the Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Adele decided to make the film after the competition called for couples to send in videos and photos for the chance to win their dream destination weddings in the Bahamas.

The 30-year-old bride-to-be found a unique way to catch the eye of the judges by using vegetables as the main characters. She used a carrot to represent herself, a cucumber as her fiancé John, and the ceremony was officiated by a formally dressed leek.

The scenes include a beach proposal, finding out about the wedding competition, and a romantic beach ceremony in the Bahamas.
Adele explained: “The idea of making a film with the vegetables popped into my head as I was doing the washing up.

“I rushed out to the craft shop and bought some felt, card, foam, vegetables, some stick-on boggly eyes, pipe cleaners, glue and scissors, plus some sand.

“It was a lot of hard work to make the clothes and the scenery - it took me pretty much a weekend to do the whole thing, and it made a minute of film in the end!

“But I’d never made a film before, so I’m delighted with the results. I’d heard of storyboards, so I made some of those, with pictures on them.”

She even hand-crafted the vegetables and made clothes for them so they would look realistic.

She added: “John was originally going to be a potato - but it was too hard to make clothes for a potato. And also, he kept falling down!”

The judges were so impressed by the couple’s efforts that they chose Adele and John as one of the winning couples of the 16 Bahamas weddings.

The pair will be tying the knot at the 14th-century Augustinian cloister on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. The prize includes a stay at the Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island for the bride and groom and two guests.

The wedding competition is part of a new marketing and publicity campaign for The Bahamas and winners will receive all-expenses-paid weddings abroad on the nation’s main 16 islands.

The tourist office is hoping that the competition will help raise awareness of some of the lesser-known Bahamian islands, such as the Berry Islands, Acklins, Mayaguana, and Crooked Island which are fantastic destinations for island weddings in the Caribbean.
