Covert Earpieces: How To Clean & Maintain Them

Professional covert earpieces are not cheap to buy, therefore it is essential to make these essential devices last as long and operate as effectively as possible.

From this standpoint, regular cleaning and intelligent maintenance are key.

The following 5 usage tips should ensure your covert earpiece lasts as long as possible:

1. Wipe smart

Keep your earpieces free from ear wax and external grime (this is most often transmitted via the fingers). Wipe after use with a damp cloth or alcowipe to ensure the earpiece remains dirt-free.

In addition to keeping your receiver clean, this will also reduce the chances of you picking up a nasty ear infection.

2. Slow twist

You can avoid damaging your earpiece and bruising your ear canal by ensuring you insert it correctly into the ear. Most quality earpieces are not built quite straight - i.e. they are slightly bent in shape - and these should therefore be twisted gently into place in order to properly plug the ear canal.

Do not force them straight or roughly into the ear canal.

3. All change

All high-quality in-ear receivers should include a built-in wax filter. Keep a running stock of these filters and change them regularly to avoid a build-up of wax leading to sound corruption and reduced in-ear volume. (Once every couple of months is a reasonable change rate.)

Note - the more regularly you use your covert earpiece (or any in-ear device in fact), the more wax your ear will naturally produce and the more often its wax filter will need replacing.

4. Power down

Device batteries can leak and if they do, the liquid they discharge will destroy your earpiece. It is therefore best to remove batteries when not in use.

5. Bag it up

Keep your earpiece in a safe place (the little bag it likely arrived in is a great choice). This way you keep your earpiece, its accessories and its batteries together, avoid the unnecessary build-up of dirt in and around the earpiece.
