Creative Petite Doll Furniture: Design Clues

Modern, Victorian, Classical - The Standards of Design

When you first started this adventure of making, building, or designing your dollhouse, did you know what style you wanted it to be?Each piece of furniture will belong to a certain room, but you must also realize that each room should connect with each other. This will be your style choice or theme for your house. In dollhouse furniture, kits and accessories there are three major themes that you could choose from. If you are more of a romantic you will choose the Victorian theme, because it resembles a tasteful past, fluid curves, and astounding furniture pieces. The second is Modern, which brings in all of the technology from our day from TV’s, stainless steel refrigerators, and off the wall furniture designs. Traditional furniture doesn't have a lot of pep, but the selection is great - this will fit any dollhouse and can be used at times in matching Modern or Victorian styles.

Accessorizing with Fabrics

Dollhouses contain an enormous potential for miniaturists and hobbyists alike. It is absolutely wonderful to be able to craft and design even the minute details of a doll's house. A great example is using linens to coordinate your dollhouse design, and make things pop. If you are looking for an example, or maybe a good starting point then I would recommend the bedroom. You can coordinate the sheets, mattresses, curtains, pillows, and even a throw blanket. In addition to the bedroom just think of the dinning room rug, curtains, and even napkins! After the dining room you go to the bathroom and do some his and her towels, or even a floor mat. Now I hope that you can see the unending possibilities that await your linens, cloths, and fabric designs.

Miniature Decisions: How Many Pieces of Furniture

It depends - this is the easiest way to answer to the question: Can I put too many pieces of doll furniture in one room?It depends on the size of the room and what you are trying to say. First, the rule of thumb is not trying to cram too much furniture, yes I know that it is fun, but everything has its limits. Second, having everything in means that what was not there is gone. You see sometimes it is not about what is in the room but what is not. Empty space when it is balanced relays a message of relaxation, cleanliness, and appeal. However, this doesn't mean that you should go to far the other way and place a single chair in an entire room. At the end of the day you will have to come to that balance on your own.

An Addition that can make a Big Difference

Everyone likes to tweak there dollhouses from time to time. In my last dollhouse building adventure I came across something that I know helped out my interior look tremendously. I discovered the importance of having trim around your floor. The discovery is not entirely new, or my own, there are many places to get doll trim, but I found the cheapest is a very thin flat balsa wood. Simply paint it the color of your dollhouse and attach it to the foot of your walls. My biggest discovery is when the trim hid most of the fine mistakes between the floor and the wall. It also prevented the wall paper to come unglued because I was covering the bottom edges with the trim. I realize that this little invention, though not my own, really made my flooring look flush and neat against the wall.
