Creative Small Fisher Price Doll Pieces: Pattern Tips

Designing the Outside of Your Dollhouse Kit

Once you have completed your inside design, it is time to look again at the exterior design and some ways to make it look better. The Paint of the dollhouse along with the look of the shingles is the first thing that you notice with your exterior. Three coats of high quality paint, recommended for dollhouses, is the minimum for dollhouse display. Make sure that you draw lines prior to applying shingles to preserve a straight look, most instruction booklets will provide the required measurements. There are many other ways to enjoy an attractive exterior; most of them are through accessories like dog houses, or gazebos. You can even have some small flower pots to place in the window seals. Lighting is another addition that will really help the look of the outside features. Lights around the porch are the most common, if you have a gazebo place a light in the center so that the light will shine down through.

Creating Colors that Work in your Environment

Color will be the over ruling design medium for your dollhouse furniture and design choices. Everyone that has gone to high school art or taken any basic art school knows a little bit about the color wheel. This wheel was designed to fit all colors into a solid circle to express similarities and differences. Opposing colors are the most different and offer attractiveness to the eye called – contrast, colors touching each other are the most similar and can be accent colors that heighten, but don’t distract from the feel. This by no means is a full explanation of the science of color, but a mere push to get you thinking in the right direction for your dollhouse coordination.

An Addition that can make a Big Difference

If you are a true crafter you are constantly tweaking your creations. The last dollhouse that I was making I discovered a great addition that really made my interior stand out. I simply created a floor board to use for the trim around the floor of the dollhouse. You can buy many types of dollhouse trim through stores but what I found to be the cheapest and easiest is purchasing a long thin flat piece of balsa wood. Simply paint it the color of your dollhouse and attach it to the foot of your walls. What I found is that they covered up the tiny bumps between the walls and the flooring. Another great thing about the trim is that it covers the edges of the wallpaper and prevents fraying. This discovery truly was a small one, but I believe that it really added to my dollhouse.

Dollhouse Flooring Options

Flooring is a very interesting topic because no one really thinks to change it, and yet those that do always turn out more amazing than before. Flooring can be a great design medium because it is the foundation for all of your furniture. It will also add that subtle touch that really upgrades your dollhouse. Carpet, linoleum, tile, stone, and hard wood are the most popular choices in flooring options. The most popular choice is carpet, probably because we enjoy carpet so much in our houses. The next set of flooring options that are popular are tile, and linoleum - a great touch for a smooth surface and an interesting color. The hardest type of flooring to add is a stone or hard wood option, but in the end these are the best from a designing standpoint.
