Credit Report And Id Theft

ID theft is one of the fastest spreading crimes in America. Many people have ended up ruining their financial life because of ID theft. The surprising thing about this crime is that at times people do not realize until they are denied a loan or a credit card that their identity has been stolen.

Therefore it becomes intensely important that you get your hands on your credit report on a regular basis. Your credit report is kept in the three major credit bureaus, Transunion, Eqifax and Experian as a documentation of all your credit activities in the past. An ID theft can lead to negatives in your credit report which further lowers your credit score to the maximum.

Those who check their credit reports on a regular basis can take quick actions in case of an ID theft and prevent the losses and stop their credit score from dipping. There have been many cases wherein a person has not realized that he has been robbed of his identity until he starts getting letters from creditors and banks. If only they would’ve checked their credit history, they could have closed all their accounts and saved them selves the loss.

It is important to safeguard your self against ID theft else you could end up with a really bad financial life and a pathetic credit score. If you’ve been paying your bills regularly and have been an ideal credit user with a good credit score but you do not have the habit of checking your credit report then you need to wise up to the fact that your identity is more attracting to the thief and has a top priority in his list. Those with a good credit report should be especially careful as an ID thief can cause more harm to him that to a person with a bad credit.

You should make sure that you get a credit report from all the credit bureaus. The three bureaus contain different credit reports. This is because different creditors report to different bureaus and there is no exchange of information amongst the bureaus. The credit score is however more or less the same at all the bureaus.

You can avail of a free annual credit report once a year from any of the credit bureaus. In case of ID theft you need to make sure that you freeze all your accounts and report to the bureaus immediately. Make sure you put all your credit activities on hold and report to your creditors and banks.
