Crime Prevention: Gps Tracking Devices

A little girl claims she was assaulted by a city bus driver. The bus driver denied the allegations. That is until he was confronted by evidence provided by GPS technology. The GPS tracking device installed by the public transportation department did exactly as it is was designed - track not only the whereabouts of city buses, but also track how much time each bus remains idle at each bus-stop or remains idle in general.

When questioned, the driver was asked to explain why, on the day of the assault, his vehicle was at an unapproved location and why it remained idle at that location for 20 minutes. Unable to come up with a logical explanation, the driver confessed to assaulting the little girl.

These days, GPS tracking devices have become and a regular and valuable crime solving tool. Thieves who target vehicles to steal are often caught in the act thanks GPS tracking devices installed into a vehicle’s dashboard.

Many security companies are embedding GPS tracking devices into company equipment to combat theft. When company equipment is stolen, the devices acts like a homing beacon, not only allowing for recovery of the equipment, but often times leading law enforcement to catch the thieves.

Theft at construction sites costs companies billions each year. While GPS tracking technology is new in the industry, it’s already proved its worth. Construction companies are embedding GPS devices in appliances at new building sites to track the appliances if stolen.

“It’s just basic GPS technology, but it’s resulted in big savings for us,” said Greg Narndeburg, a general contractor who builds new homes. “I used to spend a lot of nights worrying about my construction sites. And now I sleep a bit easier.”
