Cristiano Ronaldo Claims His Innocence After Red Card Against Portsmouth
The Portuguese schemer was given his marching orders after appearing to head butt Portsmouth midfielder Richard Hughes, though replays suggest there was minimal, if any, contact between Ronaldo and Hughes. This came after a scuffle in the Portsmouth penalty area before a Manchester United corner, when they were 1-0 down, in around the 80th minute. Ronaldo claims that he simply tilted his head toward Hughes, with his arms stretched open after the Pompey player had been witnessed pushing and kicking the Man Utd star. He claims that there was no intent in the movement, and that he was simply trying to prove a point against his marker. Meanwhile United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has suggested that something needs to be done about the unfair treatment Ronaldo is currently receiving from opposing Premiership teams, claiming that soon enough he will receive a very nasty challenge. Ferguson is unhappy at the amount of kicking and provoking that Ronaldo is receiving, and that the players need to stop trying to push Ronaldo into reacting by fouling him on the pitch. He has called on referees to not just punish players for retaliating, but to punish the players for provoking too. The referee for the match between Portsmouth and Manchester United, which eventually saw the champions held to a 1-1 draw at Fratton Park, is no stranger to adversity surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo. Steve Bennett sent Ronaldo off last season against Manchester City for retaliation again, in a move which at the time seemed quite unfair. Cristiano Ronaldo will now sit out 3 crucial games for the Premiership champions, who are now desperate for their first win after drawing the first 2 games of the season, against Reading and now Portsmouth.
