Cruising On The Earth's Final Frontier

I waited for the waves to break before doing my thing once I carefully stepped down the gangway of the cruise liner. With a quick stride, I settle onto a small rubber boat. In a matter of minutes, our small team of tourists went bouncing through a napping seal and brilliant blue ice. To get to the Antarctic Peninsula's northern area, I swing my legs over the zodiac, stepping to the northern tip right after my boat stops at the rocky beach.

A glorious sight and a pungent guano scent welcomed my nostrils as I walked by blocks of beached ice. Around where I stood, adorable adelie penguins waddled. As far as I can manage to behold, their numbers flew above a rocky slope. Needless to say, our first day of landing at the continents know to be the farthest is great and this two day cruise from Ushuaia, Argentina is exceptional even as it holds the dangers of infamously rough seas. More and more travelers across the globe see that this huge crystalline wilderness at world's bottom is worth all the trouble.

Just last year, 26,000 visitors poured in and the number rises each year. Patterns of swirling blue are broken by lectures on global sneaky penguins. Come the December days of the austral summer, the weather is pleasant and relaxing, far from its image of being the world's most mercilessly coldest continent. Going above the 40s on the peninsula, temperatures can become cruelly way beyond freezing point. Trips are usually held from November up to March.

Most of this trip spanning 11 days is spent at sea on a 100 meter ice strengthened cruise ship that is nearly full with about 100 passengers. While the ship is not fancy, it is very comfy. It has a bar and lounge with a small library and an auditorium. On board tiny yachts, many people travel to Antarctica. We go and leave the port this coming Friday night. The following day is when we get the chance to behold magnificent traveling birds from the southern seas such as the mesmerizing albatross in flight.

Tour guides mix in exciting lectures by various experts such as a marine biologist, bird specialist, historian, a geologist, and even an artist that teaches passengers how to draw and paint penguins and icebergs all to pass time while at sea. While global warming is always discussed, it came as a surprise that lectures on this did not surface during the trip.

The trip's highlights occurred in nearby islands and even during continental landings. Watching an avalanche from a distance or hearing the stentorian cracking boom of a calving iceberg are unforgettable experiences. But from the ship's decks, much can still be seen. Thanks to short hours of darkness, tourists maximize their trip.

As you go on the ship deck to behold the wind carved icebergs shimmering in hues of blue or perhaps white, float past your cruise ship, be certain to be dressed appropriately so that you will stay warm, away from the hassles strong winds bring. We marveled as we passed through white landscapes of high mountains with hanging glaciers like jewels. Most times, whales will greet humans. Marvelous hues of red and orange paint the sky during long lasting sunsets.

One of the older passengers got so sick and needed medical evacuation, such a news greeted us as we got back to the ship. Basically, this means that we need to get an airstrip way back in the Islands in South Shetland after a very long detour overnight. Many travelers now consider obtaining medical evacuation insurance prior to hopping on board a vehicle to start their journey, due to very costly evacuations like this one.

We found ourselves watching the newly Gentoo penguins being fed by their parent penguins in Ardley Island after the passenger got his evacuation and was sent to Chile. A penguin feeds its young by delicately taking the head of the chick into its mouth and regurgitates a krill into its young's mouth, and a slimy strand from beak to beak is left.
