There is no doubt that we all know someone with bad breath. It happens all the time in our daily lives. We are not in a tractor ploughing a field all day by ourselves. For the most part the vast majority of us are in fairly close contact with others. The close proximity is a sensitive thing. We feed from it. We supply our feeling of likes and dislikes, even if it is at a subconscious level.
We do not have objections to prolonged contact with those who do not poison the supply to our senses. However we do shy from those who do. One of the physical causes of this is bad breath. It does not even have to be the paint stripper variety. It just has to tip the balance of being acceptable, or not as the case may be. In the job market this can have serious consequences for an individual. The social aspect is so obvious, it needs no explanation. Before anyone goes charging off to buy the latest bad breath stuff, let
us go over a few things so we understand the background to the problem.
Coatings, called a bio film, build up on the surfaces of the mouth and throat continually. That is nature we cannot alter that, it serves a purpose of moisturising the surfaces and other important functions. It when these layers of bio film are allowed to build up and subsequently break down, due to the action of bacteria, that the volatile sulphur compounds make their presence known in the form of a bad smell.
So the bad breath treatment, involves targeting the bio film and its removal in order to cure bad breath. This can be broken down into two stages; removal of the bio film twice per day, and thereafter a maintenance regime to keep the causes of bad breath under control. Actions to take include; brushing with a new toothbrush, twice per day, and not just teeth and gums but the top, dorsum, of the tongue as well. A particular problem area is the back of the tongue just before the gag reflex point. This varies from patient to patient. Tongue scrapers may be useful for this task. Duration should be at least two minutes. A timed two minutes. Not just when the flavour of menthol becomes apparent.
Avoid alcohol rinses. They dry the mouth and cause a recurrence of the problem and some studies indicate prolonged use with an increase in the likelihood of cancer. Recent work done by researchers suggest that rinses with the aim of action through a balance of ph values produced in the mouth are more effective at eliminating bad breath. There are a huge number of products on the market, but there are other answers to the problem of curing bad breath. Have you ever smelt an empty beer glass from the night before? Ugh. Six of those in your system on top of a curry the night before, is not going to bring the mountain dew freshness from the lips you might crave first thing in the morning.
Avoid alcohol if you are serious. Eat more fruit and root vegetables. If you cannot stand eating them, drink them in the form of a smoothy after putting them in a blender. Increase intake of water. Use inter-dental brushes. Visit your dentist.
