Curse Of The Dot
Few consumers are even aware of the indicators; tiny disks located inside the battery chamber or if the design is insidious, perhaps inside the phone itself. Corporate spokespersons are heard to state authoritatively that the indicators can tell if a phone’s inner guts have been exposed to liquid contamination. Once this exposure occurs, a phone’s battery, displays, or intricate circuitry can be disabled irrevocably. But apparently, the devices don’t have to get wet to provoke the curse. The sensors can be activated by sweat, steam, extreme humidity, or condensation arising from an abrupt change in temperature. Once this color change occurs, most cell phone manufacturers won’t honor their one-year repair warranties, in many instances forcing unwary consumers with a defective phone to attempt to get the cell phone repaired, or to buy a new one. If the consumer doesn’t have the money to buy a new phone, and is unable to get it repaired, another “solution” might be to destroy it by throwing the inanimate monstrosity into the nearest river. Other methods of destroying a cell phone using liquid contaminants might well prove nasty. Such extreme measures might not be necessary. Although most independent cell phone repair companies tend to shy away from moisture-plagued electronic devices, a few can restore the errant sensors easily, sometimes in the span of a few moments following a bit of troubleshooting, but consumers must be persistent in seeking out a suitable independent repair shop. Certain larger franchise-type emporium repair shops might even welcome consumers with this particular problem, as it can be a method of attracting discriminating consumers.
