Custom Boat Strips And Designs

Most custom work on boats is done with adhesive tape on products which work well resulting in straight lines. But these adhesive products lay on the surface and are often not flexible enough to produce the custom looks that an artistic temperament may need.

If you have a custom look that you desire for your boat bottom you can use epoxy paint and even Urethane Teflon coatings for very glossy, shiny and smooth appearance. You can find Teflon coatings at www.boat-bottom-paint.com and many epoxy coating colors suitable for boat bottoms at www.concrete-floor-coatings.com .

First, the bottom must be clean. Use a pressure washer and brush as needed. If your bottom is soft enough to put your fingernail into the bottom coating you should use a spiral tip for your pressure washer to remove that soft coating. Proceed using a palm sander with 100 grit purple 3M type paper.

Next, you want to tape off your design on the bottom or sides of the boat. The 3M green tape is best for masking your custom look. Once you have your look you will need two or three coats of the color(s) you selected. If using epoxy wait about 6 yours between coats. Leaving the tape on until the epoxy dries can make it difficult to remove so remove the tape while the epoxy is wet and re-tape for each additional coat as needed. If using the Teflon Urethane it will dry thin so tape removal is seldom a problem. Once you have your look you can leave it or coat the entire surface with the clear non-yellowing Teflon coating sold at www.boat-bottom-paint.com . These great non-stick coatings are also used in cookware. Cookware uses the largest molecule known which also has a lower drag coefficient than ice. This type of coating was first developed by DuPont and marketed under the name Teflon. Now, Smooth Sailing Boat Bottom Paint has made available a clear brush-on coating using the same molecule. Use the clear boat bottom paint like wax. It is thick enough to use several layers to fill in imperfections
