Cymbidium Orchids

When it comes to orchid care, many orchid hobbyist would rather to grow a kind or species that will bring forth their blooming during several months and specially in winter. If you are one of them, your chice has a name: Cymbidium orchids.

Cymbidiums are very special orchids. Due to the fact that they naturally grow in the Himalayan region, cymbidiums’ adaptability to cool temperatures makes them the ideal orchid for growers in many countries with a temperate climate. Indeed, while some orchid species would feel badly in temperatures close to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, cymbidium can easily survive in an ambience close to 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

There are also some rules you should take into account when it comes to grow a cymbidium orchid in your house or garden.

While several orchid species need repotting each two or three years, cymbidiums do not like to be repotted. The only situation in which you will want to repot your cymbidium orchid is when the roots have grown too largely for the orchid pot.

Another aspect that makes this species different from other orchids is their special requirement regarding water and light. Your cymbidium orchid will need more water than other kinds of orchids during spring and summer. It is advisable to place your cymbidium orchid in a slatted basket with good water drainage. This way, their roots will have a good deal of air circulation, too.

Concerning light, we can say that most orchid species should avoid the direct sun rays. As an exception, cymbidiums can endure that, as long as the atmosphere is not suffocating hot.

In conclusion, if you are an orchid hobbyist it is very interesting for you to complement the growing of cymbidium orchids along with other kinds of orchids. As you will surely know, most of orchids bloom in spring or even summer. Not so with cymbidiums, which bloom in winter. What is more, their beautiful flowers linger two or three months. By growing both cymbidiums and other different orchid species in your home, you will be able to enjoy a beautifully flowered orchid garden for many, many months.
