Domain Names: Free Or Paid?
free subdomain names with a free hosting account. What I am referring to, is the free domain name you can get when registering an account with a chosen host. You get a lot of these type op offer nowadays. You host with a company and they give you a free domain name. So let's take a look at one of these scenarios: You are registered, you got your domain setup, and off you go. What now? Now you want visitors and you promote example.com. You pay for advertising to get visitors and all got well. After a year or so, you have a steady flow of users. Now you find out that your hosting company can't provide you with more bandwidth for your traffic. So now you have to move to a new host. And what do you find out? That your domain name is registered in the name of your hosting provider. Better even, your hosting company does not want you to move away from them, so they refuse to transfer the name to you. You think this does not happen? Think again. It happens all the time. Over and over again. Yes, YOU paid for advertising, YOU promoted the domain name, and all the time you were not even the owner of the name. You say to yourself: Ok, I will inform my users that there's gonna be a change in domain names. But do you realise that example.com has already been crawled by the search engines and that there's already a lot of links to example.com in the engines? So, my advise to you is: Please make sure that you are the legal owner of a domain name when registering it. Otherwise you might be disapointed at some time. Even if somebody else do the registering for you, do a whois lookup to see if you are the rightfull owner before promoting that domain.
