Deciding The Age When Kids Should Get A Phone

It seems like everyone has a personal phone. Anyone from those just walking to those older folks being wheeled around in chairs have their own cellular or sat phone. Many parents wonder at what point is it OK for their kids to get a phone. The thing that has to be considered though is what these phones will be used for.

Kids will tell you that everyone else has one. If you have a child that is in grade school or is a pre-teen, they are probably not too far off about everyone else having a phone. More and more kids are going to school with their own mobile phone at younger ages. Even though pretty much any school will tell parents hat it is not allowed.

So what is intriguing to a child about having a mobile phone? Most parents probably still use a landline at home that kids can also use for calling. Even though home phones are very useful, they are much more simple than what you can do on a mobile phone. Cell phones would likely be a better option over satellite phones for kids due to the monthly cost, if in fact you would even consider giving the child a phone.

Internet access and games are two big things that would appeal to children who want phones. Many cell phones also come with a camera that allows users to snap quick pictures and post them online to their social media profiles. Even though the majority of young kids don't meet the minimum age requirements of these sites, they are still easily accessible to anyone who knows how to sign up. As a parent, you really have to think about what you want your kids doing and what a phone would allow them to do online.

You should ask yourself if using a phone to take pictures and play games is enough of a reason to get your child a phone. If your child won't use it for calling and communication purposes, it may not be worth it. You could always just get them a simple camera or a handheld game that comes with a camera. This would solve both problems and save a lot of money.

In situations where a child sees one parent at one home and the other at another home, communication is probably more important. These circumstances may require a child to have a method of contacting either parent on their own. However, the safety issue is something very important to consider when deciding on giving a young person a phone.
