Satellite navigation has become essential for people irrespective of whether they walk, ride or drive. There was a time when the manufacturers of satnav devices were apprehensive that the mobile phones with satnav features will pose serious threats to their market prospects. But it was not. As already mentioned dedicated satnav devices continue to receive patronage from the people who need foolproof support for navigation.

A positive development is the entry of well known satnav equipment manufacturers Garmin into handset segment. Garminfone is a navigating handset with Android powered smart phone and camera. TOM TOM, another manufacturer also contemplating on the production of more sophisticated and multifunctional products to stem the threats from mobile phone makers. Apart from smart phones, tablet computers may also pose threats to the dedicated satnav market fortunes when they feature satnav.

Technology is in a fast forward mode and more consumer oriented products may evolve in the near future to support satellite navigation. But when it comes to crucial roles in the field of navigation, there may not be very many alternatives to dedicated satellite devices. The latest example is the dedicated satnav being adopted in modern cars as original equipment.
