Defining Your Choices In Internet Technology

The Internet has become an integral part of daily life for consumers and businesses alike. The ever-growing need for instant email communications, instant messaging and even recreational items like YouTube and social networks of all types require that you have broadband Internet access. Dialup is simply not sufficient to provide benefits. What types of broadband Internet technology can provide you with benefits? You'll find several technologies available for your needs. However, not all broadband technologies offer the same benefits. Below, you'll find a rundown of what each offers (and doesn't offer).

DSL – Capable of tremendous download speeds (in some areas), DSL is one of the two standards in broadband technology. It offers considerable benefits for customers able to take advantage of it. However, DSL may be a dated technology, simply because it relies on a landline being installed in your home or office. If you are one of the growing number of consumers who does not want a landline in your home, you won't be able to use this solution. In addition, DSL is problematic because the service is not available everywhere. Urban and developed suburban areas are the only ones to benefit from this technology, with rural areas and even some suburban areas being left out in the cold.

Cable – If you have a cable Internet connection, you have one of the (potentially) fastest connections around. In addition, it can be bundled with your cable TV service, providing some savings over the cost. Cable Internet access is usually a bit more expensive than DSL, though. In addition, cable service has several drawbacks. For instance, it is a "shared" connection, meaning that the more people in your area online at any given time, the slower your connection will be. Of course, cable connections are not available in all areas, either. In fact, cable is even less available than DSL, because cable companies do not serve rural areas at all.

Satellite Internet – The newest form of broadband Internet access, satellite technology is comparable to both DSL and cable in terms of download speeds attainable. In addition, satellite service can be bundled with satellite TV programming for better savings. Since satellite TV is cheaper than cable TV, this results in better savings overall. In addition, satellite Internet is available everywhere – it is not limited to urban or suburban areas and does not rely on a network of ground cables for service. Satellite Internet service can provide broadband speeds to any consumer or business in North America, as long as you have an unobstructed view of the sky to the south.

Obviously, the best technology available is satellite Internet, especially for consumers who do not wish to have a landline installed in their homes and those who live outside the limited sphere of DSL and cable companies. Satellite Internet can help you connect with the world in realistic speeds, without costing a fortune and without forcing you to make use of technology that you neither need, nor want.
