Dementia Care Loss Of Cognitive Abilities

Dementia can be understood as a serious loss of cognitive abilities in a person, previously unimpaired, beyond what is assumed to be a normal ageing process for a person. It may either be static or progressive. The former is due to distinct brain injury while the latter results in long-running decline owing to disease or damage in the body. Though dementia is more common in the aged, but the younger lot is not completely bereft of it. Basically, dementia is a set of various symptoms and signs in which the affected areas of one’s cognition can be attention, memory, problem solving and language. Normally, the condition is let prevail for at least six months before being diagnosed, as it could be any cognitive dysfunction that spans for a shorter duration of time. If it continues for just a week or two, it is termed as delirium. In the initial phase, the higher mental functions get affected, while later, disorientation in a person is quite visible.

Though dementia is treatable often, becomes incurable when the causes are progressive.

The symptoms involved in dementia are classified in two categories- reversible or irreversible. In which category the symptom falls, depends on the disease’s etiology. Most common symptoms include:

1. Loss of memory: the affected person forgets way back home, may forget people, their names and common routes. At times it is difficult to recall what happened recently too.

2. Keeping moody: the affected person has a lot of mood swings owing to the damage caused to the brain parts that guard and control emotions.

3. Difficulty in communication: the affected person has trouble in reading, writing or talking.

With time, the ability to handle every day chores is also diminished. Dementia disorders are classifiable in various ways. These classifications include cortical dementia, sub-cortical dementia, progressive dementia, primary dementia, secondary dementia and AD. Dementia can also be triggered by Alzheimer's disease , stroke, Dementia with Lewy bodies, Fronto-temporal dementia, progressive supranuclear palsy, Binswanger's disease, Korsakoff's syndrome, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and AIDS.

People who suffer from the disease need intense dementia care to run their lives smoothly. Though it may be a challenge for the near ones, it is a bigger challenge for the ones suffering from it. In such a time, it is needed that the situation is handled with care and the patient is given ample love along with proper medical assistance.
