Depression drugs are mostly antidepressants. These medications are helpful in treating several types of this condition. Their effectiveness however may vary from individual to individual. Some of the most common types of antidepressants are Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs), Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs).
TCAs work by affecting two chemical neurotransmitters that are located in the brain. These neurotransmitters are nor epinephrine and serotonin. Some side effects associated with these medications are dry mouth, blurred vision and drowsiness. Other side effects are sexual problems, skin rashes and unstable weight. Examples of TCAs include Surmontil, Anafranil, Pertofrane and Adapin
Other depression drugs are the SSRIs. They work by changing the amount of chemicals in the brain system known as serotonin. Examples include Lexapro, Celexa, Fluoxetine, and Luvox. Some side effects of SSRIs are headaches, diarrhea and nausea. They are also said to induce failure to reach orgasm, decrease libido as well as other erectile problems. Another side effect of SSRIs is the serotonin syndrome. This is a drug reaction that leads to self poisoning when certain foods or drugs are mixed in the body.
MAOIs are usually prescribed in cases where other treatment methods have failed. These medications are said to have more severe side effects. Some of these side effects include heart attacks, liver inflammations, seizure and strokes. If MAOIs are taken with foods rich in tyramine, they can lead to a heart reaction. There are several depression drugs available in the market and their effectiveness may vary from person to person.
