Developed Nations Versus Overweight Children

The developed world has, without doubt, become a breeding ground creating a race of overweight children. It is now common knowledge that many overweight children suffer from more anxiety and possess poorer social skills when compared with similar aged, normal weighted children. Problems resulting from these higher anxiety levels and the lack of adequate social skills, often result in some of these children disrupting classroom activity and not wishing to participate in sporting activities.

Not participating in sporting activities further compounds the overweight problem, as the child misses a perfect opportunity to shed weight by working excess fat off by enjoying playing football, cricket, swimming, just to name a few of the very popular sports that most children enjoy during and after school hours.

Additional social problems for overweight children are the likelihood that the child will be the last to be chosen as playmates or be selected as a member of a sporting team. The end result of perhaps becoming isolated from the general school population is that the overweight child feels pushed into a corner, and eventually, rebels against such treatment.

Children with a weight problem may sense that they are different to normal weighted children, and as a result, end up indulging in unhealthy diet habits. These unhealthy diet habits can then develop into serious eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, and even bulimia.

Overweight children also run a much higher risk of suffering from diabetes, chronic joint ailments and heart disease. Many parents are no doubt under the belief that such diseases will not culminate in health problems while the child is young. However, various research studies clearly indicate that Doctors regularly examine young children already showing signs of excessive high blood pressure readings, high cholesterol levels and of major concern; insulin resistance.

Without the slightest doubt it is of essential importance to ensure an overweight child is nurtured with good dietary habits and is encouraged to be active in sports to assist them to lose excess weight if they are to enjoy a healthy adult life. The family Doctor should always be the first port of call to obtain professional advice to correct any childhood overweight problem.
