As Assistant Dean for one of America’s finest medical schools, I literally helped hundreds not only getting accepted to medical school but getting into top notch residency programs in order to complete their medical training. Now, what does all this have to do with developing your approaches to organizationally developing yourself? My experiences as an Assistant Dean required the skills of humility; the skill to listen intently on: Students concerns, comments and questions. Then there needs to be the process of respect; informing the almighty faculty that there is no need for concerns about Students behavior but rather the freedom to teach Students who eager to learn.
The skills required of me necessitated seeking buy-in, negotiating skills, consensus builder and the ability to convey a sincerity genuine interest to build upon the team concept. I needed to demonstrate the abilities to take charge without being overbearing and to demonstrate the spirit of honesty, respect and integrity. In essence, I was there to serve and serve with humility. I needed to make sure all the tools were available to Students for their success and that the faculty would also succeed with their teaching to an audience eager to be taught.
The approaches of organizationally developing yourself will require the abilities to see the big picture and mapping out a plan that will demonstrate to others that you can take charge but not be overbearing. I was a manager who knew how to get the needed resources for students and knew how to solve problems. All of the factors mentioned are in essence “Approaches” to developing yourself – so think of the following: servant, poise leader, approachable, a great listener who then takes action. These are approaches one must work on all of the time, on an ongoing basis.
