Diabetes Can Affect Prolonged Existence In Humans

Latest research on diabetes has revealed that older people with diabetes have less life span than other without diabetes. For instance a 50 year old diabetic on an average may live less than 8.5 years when compared to a healthy non-diabetic person. According to National Academy on Aging Society, older diabetic people have low life expectancy compared to those who have not the disease. A person 60 years and above have difference in life expectancy of 5.4 years. When he/she reaches 90, difference is one year.

November, this year was diabetes awareness month and the report “Profiles of an Aging Society” was released to increase awareness of diabetes among common people.

Diabetic disease has no cure at all but progress of the disease can be stalled by taking measures including proper diet, regular exercises and if needed medications. Sometimes insulin is given to the patient when body is unable to produce enough insulin to convert food into energy. In older people diabetes also leads to other problems like depression, heart disease and other disabilities.

The percent of diabetic patients have risen considerably, and more cases are reported in age group of 50 and above. In 1998, it was 11 percent in case of Hispanic whites which increased to 18 percent in 2008, and in 1998, 22 percent of non-Hispanic blacks leaped to 32 percent in 2008.

Diabetes is a disease which is a major concern around the world today, and leads to more deaths among people. Proper widespread awareness is vital to make people aware of this disease so that steps can be taken before it affects somebody.
