Diabetes: The Most Preventable Disease

Many people, like my mother, believe that type II diabetes is a challenge that arises when a person has too much sugar in their diet. And so, the sugar in the blood and urine. This is not the cause.

Type II diabetes is caused by a category of hereditary and dietary factors. no one knows the exact cause of type II diabetes, it can occur in more ways than one.

What is known is that almost all of the people that do get type II diabetes do not exercise. Once you exercise, (and I don’t mean doing a Michael Phelps workout, I mean something as little as a stroll in the park) your skeletal muscles are much more susceptible to insulin. This can lead to the prevention, and even curing marginal diabetes. Dr. Ruchi Mathur, M.D from Medicinenet writes:

" major benefit of exercise is its effect on the heart and the associated reduction in death from heart disease. In addition to lowering the risk of heart disease in type 2 diabetes, exercise helps to decrease the chances of developing diabetes. This can be especially important for those with borderline diabetes. In one study, the risk of developing diabetes was reduced by 24% (based on an energy expenditure of 2000 calories per week through exercise). This protective effect of exercise was seen the most in the group at highest risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The mechanism for this benefit is that exercising muscles are more sensitive to circulating insulin. They thus take up blood sugar more easily and use sugar more effectively. Research has shown that even short term aerobic exercise improves the sensitivity of muscles to insulin."
