Diabetic Children: How To Care For Them When They Are 6 To 12 Years Old
Realize that it is time for your child to be responsible for his own insulin intake. You as a parent should remind them of the importance of taking insulin shots. As they are no longer toddlers, you should teach them to be a bit more independent already. Besides, they have school to attend to. You cannot possibly administer their insulin treatment by being by their side all the time, can you? At school, ensure that the institution serve good and healthy foods. Even better, make sure that the school your child goes to has a program in which experts or people with knowledge of the disease (diabetes) can help your child in case things go wrong. In fact, this is a law by itself. The school must have a good and immediate access to glucose and restrooms. As a parent yourself, you must make yourself available at all times. For example, if your wife is working, be sure that you are available to your child at a nearer location. At least, when your child suffers from complications, one parent (either you or your wife) can be there as fast as possible. Note that this is for an emergency case. For further education, you should enroll your kids into diabetes camps. These are special courses organized to teach your kids the importance of diabetes treatment and adaption skills and the disease itself.
