Diabetic Diets - Breaking Down Barriers And Focusing On Benefits

It is a simple enough matter to stick to any diet for a short time but when you are faced with following a life-long diabetes diet you will find that there are a variety of barriers that will hinder you in your efforts. The secret therefore to beginning a diabetes diet is to know exactly what these barriers are and to concentrate your mind on the benefits of your diet.

The sort of barriers which you could well encounter include:

* Cost. Buying fresh fruit and vegetables is not cheap, especially when you have to buy 'out of season' imported products. But remember that, as your consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables goes up, you are also lowering your consumption of expensive convenience foods and snack items such as potato chips, so the two will even out.

* Social Pressure. Getting your family on board ought to be quite simple but it might not be quite so easy to bring other people on side. Of course it ought to be simple enough to educate your close friends and wider family about your dietary requirements and help to avoid problems at dinner parties and other gatherings at which food is served, but there are inevitably going to be times when you find yourself in a social setting and are tempted to try a piece of home-made cake.

Here it is a case of planning ahead and working out precisely what you will do before the event. For instance, you might decide to have a small piece of cake and merely adjust your diet for the rest of the day to compensate. Alternatively, you might choose to eat before you go out or to take your own favorite snack along, plus a little bit extra for other guests to try.

* Family. Some family member may find it difficult to accept a different diet and they might be less than happy with your 'alternative' curry. Here it is best to simply sit the family down and discuss your diabetes and exactly what it means as far as your diet is concerned. In nearly all cases the family will be more than supportive once they know your position.

* Culture. Food is very much than simple sustenance and for a lot of us it is also very much an expression of culture. Happily, there are many different ways in which to prepare food and you will find a number of excellent diabetes cookbooks which focus on food from different cultures.

However you choose to tackle these barriers, they will need to be faced and overcome. This should not be too difficult with a little bit of thought and some effort, but you will also find it helpful to focus your attention on some of the benefits of following your diabetes diet:

* Feeling better. If you do not stick to your diet there is a very good chance that you will overeat, and eat the wrong food, increasing your blood sugar level and making you feel tired and generally unwell. However, if you stick to your diabetes diet you will feel a lot healthier.

* Better weight control. If you stick to your diabetes diet you will not overeat or eat food that might cause weight gain, permitting you to keep your figure and lowering the risk of other health problems such as stroke and heart attack.

* Lessen your risk from low blood sugar levels. We tend to think of diabetes in terms of high blood sugar levels but a number of diabetics also experience many of the difficulties associated with low blood sugar levels, such as, weakness, sweating, dizziness and irritability, and can even fall into a diabetic coma. Your diabetes diet will keep you on a regular pattern of eating that will lessen this risk considerably.

With the right diabetes diet, and a little bit of exercise, you will find that it is possible to control your diabetes and live a normal life.
