We all know about the different types of tires available for different seasons, but most of us aren’t really bothered. Most of us have a question in mind, “Do we really need snow tires”? Actually, there is no definite answer for this. It all depends upon your driving conditions. If you don’t travel much, you don’t necessarily require these tires, but from a safety point of view, they are a must.

Difference between Summer and Winter Tires

Winter tires are made from silicon and natural rubber which helps them remain soft in adverse conditions. They are also more flexible than summer tires and this characteristic helps the vehicle to move smoothly, given any weather condition. The tread design is different as well, and the larger void grooves help the vehicle to cruise easily even in snow. If metal studs are attached on the tire, ice and thick layers of snow turn out to be a piece of cake to drive on.

One important thing you must remember, make sure all your tires are of the same type. Using two summer and two winter tires can be really dangerous. Imagine your front wheels are winter tires and they are easily moving through the snow, while the rear tires are summer ones and they can’t wade through the snow. What is going to happen? Yes, the car is going to skid and unexpected reactions can happen.

While you definitely don’t want such things happening, make sure your state’s laws allow you to use studded tires during the winters or you get into deep trouble. Studded tires can be extremely useful to cut through ice, but in the presence of snow they may fail. So again, your driving conditions matter a lot.

The easiest way is to get an extra set of wheels and tires. You can then change them between seasons and make sure you don’t have to face adverse effects during extreme conditions.
